Bruno Mars & Light Shows

Disclaimer #1 - I am not a huge fan of X Factor or any of the music game shows.

Disclaimer #2 - MOST of the songs on the radio are pretty lame but…

Disclaimer #3 - I love light shows.  Especially ones like this.

Now where can I find about $300,000 to make one of our own… hmmmmm.

You Have To Start Somewhere

Album Blog | Day 79

First and foremost, READ THIS:  A fantastic post from Bob Lefsetz regarding what it looks like to be s songwriter today.

Now we are not a perfect band.  But the following is shared for any who need encouragement that you can be better than you think.

A couple of years ago Ryan and I realized that no one was going to hand us a music deal for thousands of dollars… Why? Cause Rock and Roll bands are a dying breed. There is no industry for them. Now we have Game Show Rockstars… Tom Petty’s words, not mine.

So, we set out to learn not only how to make records on our own but how to make them cheaply. We called the project Rock And Roll Reaction and decided to release them in volumes. Vol. 1’s not bad, it has a good tune here and there… We made it in our drummers house. Total budget was a little more than $1,000, thanks to a lot of hard work from Ryan Cecil mixing and recording the thing.

Next, we made Vol. 2 - we put it out 8 months after Vol. 1 - it wasn’t perfect, but it helped me stumble upon an interesting truth…

QUANTITY makes QUALITY.  When it comes to songwriting… the more you write, the better you get.  And when you force yourself to put songs out there fast, you write fast.  And when you write fast, you write more.  And when you write more…. you get better songs.

Now we are on to Vol. 3 - we just finished in the studio, and after touring ourselves dry last year, we met a lot of fans who like Vol. 1 & 2… and so they chipped in almost $14K to help us make Vol. 3!!

We wrote over 30 songs to put on this one.  And in doing so, realized that we wanted to make it a full length album.  The process has so defined who were are that we are changing the name of the album from Vol.3 to We Are The Seventy Ones.  It should be out in August.  It sounds 10 times better than anything we have done before and I can’t wait to share it with all of you.

Here’s to the future.

STUDIO FOOTAGE!!!

Album Blog | Day 78

Hey guys - Here’s a little video of our first day at Valve Studios.  We absolutely LOVE the songs and are even more excited now that we are hearing them recorded!

We will leave at the end of this week, and record vocals and some more instruments at home.  But the sounds we are getting here for drums, bass and guitars and OUT OF THIS WORLD.

This thing is going to sound amazing.
